Breast cancer is the commonest and deadliest complex disease that afflicts Singaporean women. Based on the latest cancer registry report released in 2017, it was estimated that 1 in 14 women in Singapore will develop the condition before the age of 75. It creates a huge socioeconomic impact by affecting women in their economically productive years, disrupting childcare and daily function as a family unit where women are traditionally the lynchpin. To add, breast cancer incidences have increased by 3-fold in the past four decades.
This underscores the importance of advancing breast cancer research to allow clinicians and scientists to innovate and improve breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, detection and prevention.
Being diagnosed with cancer might seem like a death sentence to many. Despite an increasing number of diagnosed cases, advances in diagnostic techniques and an increase in effective treatment options have significantly improved breast cancer survival rates.
However, with early detection and better treatment options, the survival rate for breast cancer has improved over the years. According to the Singapore Cancer Registry report released in 2017, Stage I breast cancer patients have a 5-year survival rate of 90% while Stage II patients have a 5-year survival rate of 80%.
