Bortezomib - Side Effects, Precautions, and Contraindications

What side effects can Bortezomib cause?

Early side effects
  • Nausea and vomiting may occur
    There are medications available, which may prevent or decrease these side effects. If you are given these medications, take them as directed.
Delayed side effects
  • A drop in the blood cell counts may occur 7 to 14 days after treatment
  • Low blood pressure or dizziness
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Itch or rash
  • Muscle or joint pain, weakness
  • Tiredness
  • Mild swelling in the limbs
  • Numbness, tingling or burning sensation in the fingers and toes

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  • Fever of 38°C or higher
  • Excessive diarhea lasting longer than 24 hours
  • Unusual bleeding, bruising or black tarry stools
  • Confusion, loss of balance, vision disturbances, reduced strength or weakness in an arm/leg
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain

  • Grapefruit juice, St John’s Wort, green tea or green tea extracts
  • Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) supplements, especially 12 hours before and after bortezomib treatment
